The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a delay in the marking of the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts, citing an outstanding debt from the government.

Despite the successful completion of the BECE examinations, WAEC stated that it will not begin the marking process until the government fulfills its financial obligations.

While the government has paid GH₵55.8 million towards the cost of conducting the 34th edition of the BECE, the full amount owed to WAEC remains outstanding.

WAEC Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi has confirmed the delay, emphasizing that the marking process, including the convening of examiners’ meetings and the subsequent swapping of scripts, can only commence upon receipt of the full payment.

“We will not begin marking the BECE scripts until the outstanding debt is cleared,” Kapi stated. “Payment will Fastrack the process and enable us to move forward with the marking and subsequent release of results.”

This delay raises concerns about the potential impact on the BECE results timeline, with WAEC officials stating that the duration of the marking process and the release of results will be determined by the Relevant Professional Coordinating Committee (RPCC) after preliminary coordination meetings.

A total of 569,095 candidates participated in the BECE for School, which concluded on July 15th. An additional 1,366 candidates are expected to sit for the BECE for Private Candidates.
