Teacher trainees across the country are facing a severe financial crisis as the promised funds for their allowance remains unpaid, despite assurances from the government.
These trainees have only received two months’ worth of their allowance since the beginning of the 2023/2024 academic year, which is scheduled to end in a matter of weeks.
The trainees’ woes began when their tutors embarked on an industrial action on June 14, causing them to lose nearly two months of their scheduled activities.

This strike resulted in the extension of their second semester activities, amplifying their financial struggles further.
Many trainees claim to have depleted their savings during the strike, leaving them grappling with financial challenges.
Moreover, the final year students, who were compelled to reside off-campus due to a new residential policy for colleges of education, are now urging the government to fulfill its promise of paying them their allowances.
According to them, the strike did not only exhaust their resources but also disrupted their meticulously planned financial arrangements.
They are now forced to extend their rent contracts and bear the burden of additional utility bills.

Throughout the course of the strike, the government pledged to release the trainees’ allowances once the strike was called off by their tutors.
According to the trainees, while the strike has indeed been called off, there has been no sign of the allowances promised them.
They are therefore urging the government to release their funds as soon as possible to help ease their financial burden.
