The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to immediately call off its strike action.

The directive was issued on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, following a meeting between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions (MELRP), the Ministry of Finance, and the PSWU.

The NLC summoned the parties after receiving a notice from the PSWU on October 14, 2024, threatening industrial action beginning on Monday, October 21, 2024.

The union’s demands centered around two institution-specific allowances for its members.

The NLC has mandated that negotiations on the allowances resume by October 31, 2024, with the outcome communicated to the commission by November 6, 2024.

The commission has urged both parties to engage in good faith and work towards a mutually agreeable solution.

The NLC’s intervention aims to ensure a harmonious industrial relations environment and facilitate a resolution between the PSWU and the FWSC.

This aligns with the commission’s role, as mandated by the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), to resolve labor disputes.

In response to the NLC’s directives, the Director in charge of Grievances and Negotiations at the FWSC, Prof Charles Adabo Oppong, welcomed the decision and expressed commitment to finding mutually beneficial solutions with the PSWU.

The PSWU had announced its strike intentions on October 15, 2024, citing undue delays by the government, represented by the FWSC, in finalizing negotiations on the two institution-specific allowances owed to its members.
