The High Commission of Nigeria in South Africa has issued a statement advising Nigerian citizens residing in the country to be cautious in their speech and behaviour if Nigeria emerges victorious over South Africa in the upcoming AFCON semi-final match.
The advisory, released on February 6, 2024, under the title “Advisory On Safe Conduct For Nigerians In South Africa Before, During And After 2024 AFCON Match Between Super Eagles And Bafana Bafana,” comes in response to inflammatory online comments directed at Nigerians by some South African individuals in anticipation of the match on Wednesday.

The High Commission highlighted concerns over threats made towards Nigerians, particularly references to “Nigerians cooking jollof rice” and warnings of “showing pepper to Nigerians” in case of a South African defeat.
As a precautionary measure, Nigerians were urged to exercise restraint in their reactions, be mindful of their surroundings while watching the match, and avoid engaging in disruptive or provocative behavior if Nigeria wins.

Furthermore, Nigerian residents were reminded to uphold their reputation for good conduct and adherence to the law throughout the event.
According to the High Commission, any instances of provocation should be reported to the appropriate authorities rather than responded to in kind.
