Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has vowed to dedicate his life to ensuring the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill, into law this year.

Speaking to traditional leaders and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on January 26th, Speaker Bagbin reaffirmed his commitment, stating that he is “prepared to lose my life for this cause.”

Bagbin’s declaration underscores his fervent belief in upholding what he perceives as Ghana’s cultural and moral values.

He expressed deep concern over the handling of the bill in the previous administration, noting that while Parliament had passed the legislation in the 8th Parliament, it was not assented to by the former president. He deemed this act unconstitutional and a misstep.

“Parliament passed the LGBTQ bill, but the former president’s refusal to sign it into law was unconstitutional. Parliament, not the president, holds the authority to pass laws. That decision was a misstep, and the people rightly held him accountable,” Speaker Bagbin asserted emphatically.

The Speaker revealed plans to seek counsel from the Minister for Justice and Attorney General on how best to move forward with the bill, which is believed to have expired at the end of the 8th Parliament in 2024.

He assured the public that the current bill would not suffer the same fate, promising swift and decisive action to ensure its passage and subsequent presidential approval.

“This bill will be enacted this year. It [Homosexuality] is ungodly, and I will not tolerate any jokes on this matter,” Bagbin declared, leaving no room for ambiguity about his stance on the issue.
