President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam as the new Finance Minister, replacing Ken Ofori-Atta.

This move comes as part of a series of changes (reshuffles) in his government’s leadership

Early Life

Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam who previously served as the Deputy Minister for Energy and a Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, was born on April 15, 1974.

He is 49 years old and will turn 50 in April.

Education and Background

Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam attended the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) in Tamale from 1988 to 1991, followed by Tamale Secondary School (now Tamale Senior High School) from 1991 to 1993.

Hon. Adam holds a B.A (Hons) in Economics and an M.Phil in Economics from the University of Cape Coast.

Additionally, he earned a Ph.D. in Petroleum Economics from the Centre for Energy, Petroleum & Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee in the UK, with a specialization in petroleum fiscal policy in resource-led economies and resource governance.

He is also a fellow of the Institute of Certified Economists of Ghana.

Political Career

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam displayed an early interest in politics.

Even during his time at NOBISCO, he earned the nickname ‘political Anta’ due to his involvement.

While studying at the University of Cape Coast, he served as the secretary of TESCON (The Tertiary Students Confederacy of the NPP).

In 1998, he was elected as the national secretary of the National Union of Students and later became its national president.

Adam first contested as the parliamentary candidate of the NPP for Choggu Tishegu Constituency in 2000, although he unfortunately lost to Hon. Abubakari Sumani.

In 2004, he ran as the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Tamale Central Constituency but was unsuccessful, losing to Alhassan Wayo Seini of the NDC.

Notable Appointments

In 2005, President John Kufuor appointed him as the Deputy Northern Regional Minister.

Following this, he held the position of Mayor of Tamale, showcasing his commitment to public service and governance.
