Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has had a distinguished career in law and politics.
He began his education at Sombo R.C. Primary and Wa Secondary Schools in the Upper West Region, before moving to Tamale Secondary School in the Northern Region, where he obtained his Advanced Level Certificate in 1977.
He then attended the University of Ghana School of Law, graduating in 1980 with a degree in Law and English.
He furthered his legal education at the Ghana Law School and was called to the Bar in 1982.
Additionally, he holds a Certificate in Privatization in Public Utilities and Infrastructure from the Eastern South Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) in Tanzania, and an Executive Master’s Degree in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 2008.
Bagbin’s early career included roles at the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) as Assistant Administrative Officer and acting Secretary to the Board.
He also worked at the State Hotels Corporation as Personnel Manager and taught English in Libya.
Upon returning to Ghana in 1986, he served as an external solicitor for various banks, industries, and clients, and later established the Law Trust Company, a private law firm, with two partners.
Elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1992, Bagbin has chaired several parliamentary committees, including the Public Accounts Committee, Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, and House Committee.
He served as Minority Leader in Parliament in late 2000 and was appointed Majority Leader in January 2009.
His executive roles included Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, and Minister for Health, as well as an adviser in the Office of the President.

In January 2017, Bagbin was elected as the 2nd Deputy Speaker of the 7th Parliament.
He has served on numerous boards and international organizations, including the Africa-Caribbean-Pacific Group (ACP), the European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly (EUJPA), and the Global Organization for Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC).
Bagbin was elected Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana, serving from January 2021 to January 2025.
He is the immediate past President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the President of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Parliaments in Africa.
A member of the Ghana Bar Association since 1982, Bagbin has dedicated 43 years to the legal profession.
