
Haruna Iddrisu, a seasoned lawyer and politician, has been nominated to lead the Ministry of Education, marking a significant step in his distinguished career.
Born on September 8, 1970, Iddrisu brings a wealth of experience from various roles in both parliamentary and ministerial capacities.
A football enthusiast and owner of Karela United and Steadfast Football Clubs, Iddrisu is also a Member of Parliament representing Tamale South in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
He started his early education at Kulikuli school. Iddrisu studied at the University of Ghana between 1993 and 1997 where he obtained B.A. (Hons) in Sociology.
He was active in student politics and was the President of the National Union of Ghana Students during his final year.
Iddrisu is also a barrister and has been a member of the Ghana Bar Association since 2002.
His political journey began with student leadership and a rise to become the National Youth Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2002, a position he held for eight years.
Iddrisu’s parliamentary career began in 2004 when he was elected to represent the newly formed Tamale South constituency.

In his early parliamentary days, he served as the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications and as the Minority Spokesman on Communications when his party was in opposition.
He has consistently demonstrated strong support from his constituency, retaining his seat in the 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections.
He even ran unopposed for the NDC Parliamentary primaries for four consecutive times.
Despite his party losing the presidential elections in 2016, Iddrisu was chosen to lead the minority caucus as Minority Leader in the 7th Parliament, a position he held until January 2023 when the minority leadership changed.
Beyond his parliamentary duties, Iddrisu has held several ministerial positions, including Minister for Communications (under the Mills and Mahama administrations), Minister for Trade (2013-2014), and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations (appointed in July 2014).
Iddrisu has also demonstrated a commitment to community development, notably donating a CHPS compound to the Duunyin community in the Northern region in 2020.

His appointment as Education Minister-designate reflects his extensive government experience and ability to lead effectively.
