OSP Launches Probe into Alleged Sale of GES Appointment Letters

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has launched an extensive investigation into allegations of corruption within the Ghana Education Service (GES), specifically focusing on the suspected sale of appointment letters and employment positions to prospective teachers.

The investigation, detailed in the OSP’s half-year report released on January 13, 2025, targets a network of GES staff and middlemen suspected of engaging in these corrupt practices.

The OSP’s report states that the probe aims to uncover “suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses in respect of the sale of Ghana Education Service (GES) appointment letters and employment to applicants.”

The investigation will specifically look into how public office is allegedly being used for personal gain through the sale of these essential documents.

This investigation is part of a broader effort by the OSP to combat corruption within public institutions.

The OSP has also announced it has commenced an investigation into the recruitment practices of the National Service Authority, looking into allegations of corrupt practices.

The half-year report covers the period from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, during which the OSP says it sustained efforts to fulfil its corruption-prevention mandate through engagement with stakeholders, implementation of strategic measures, and targeted investigations.

The OSP has reaffirmed its commitment to educating and empowering the youth, instilling in them a commitment to fighting corruption.

Additionally, the office has emphasized that its asset recovery efforts will continue with a focus on deterring corrupt practices and ensuring accountability within governance.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor is a key anti-corruption institution in Ghana, functioning as a specialized autonomous investigative and prosecutorial agency.

Its powers and functions are based on the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959) and related legislative instruments.
