Organized Labour has called off their nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Monday, July 15th, after the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) announced the termination of the proposed sale of 60% of its shares in four hotels.

The strike, which was to be indefinite, was called in protest of the sale, which labour unions argued would negatively impact the management of pension funds.

In a letter dated July 12th, SSNIT informed organized labour of its decision to scrap the sale. Following this news, an emergency meeting of labour leaders on Monday resulted in the decision to suspend the strike.

“All workers are requested to resume work on Tuesday, July 16th” a press statement released by organized labour directed.

While the strike has been averted for now, the organized labour has issued a one-month ultimatum to SSNIT to address outstanding concerns regarding pension management.

“We are giving SSNIT one month to engage Organised Labour to address all outstanding issues related to the management of our pensions otherwise we advise ourselves,” stated a joint statement from the Trades Union Congress (Ghana), the Forum of Public Sector Workers, and the Ghana Federation of Labour.

The statement also thanked workers for their support and emphasized the importance of solidarity.
