The Organized Labour has released a press statement directing all public sector workers in Ghana to refrain from going to work starting Monday, 15th July 2024 until the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) publicly announces the termination of the sale processes for its shares in four hotels.

This demand comes in the wake of recent developments regarding the proposed sale of 60% of SSNIT’s stake in the hotels.

The Organized Labour, in their statement, revealed that they had previously held a meeting with the President of the Republic on June 25th, 2024, to address this matter.

However, on 11th July 2024, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, who is also responsible for pensions, made a statement in Parliament confirming that the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has approved the sale of the shares.

The Organized Labour stated they finds the approval puzzling, considering that just two weeks prior, on 28th June 2024, the NPRA had directed SSNIT to suspend negotiations with Rock City Hotel Ltd.

This inconsistency raises questions about the validity and fairness of the deal.

The Organized Labour has reiterated that the proposed sale of SSNIT’s shares in the hotels is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers. Therefore, they firmly demand that SSNIT immediately terminates the process.

To demonstrate their seriousness and unity on this issue, they have called for all workers in Ghana to refrain from reporting to work starting Monday, 15th July 2024, until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the sale process.

“From Monday, 15th July, 2024 all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels”
