The National Communications Authority (NCA) has given the green light to Space X Starlink GH LTD, the operator of Starlink Satellite Broadband, to offer Satellite Broadband Services within Ghana.

This pivotal decision was conveyed through a concise statement released by the NCA on Thursday, April 25.

The statement highlighted that the approval, following the policy sanctioning of the satellite licensing framework in Ghana by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, signifies a significant milestone.

The scrutiny of the agreement, which involves a considerable investment in Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure by a foreign entity, centered on ensuring compliance with existing regulatory protocols and assessing the potential benefits for service enhancement and industry innovation.

During a parliamentary session, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, underscored the government’s intention to license Starlink’s operations as part of a broader strategy to mitigate internet disruptions experienced in the country.

She also urged other operators to consider establishing a presence in Ghana.

In her address to Parliament concerning the substantial internet breakdowns encountered on March 18, Owusu-Ekuful emphasized the importance of activating RASCOM, the Regional African Satellite Company, as a collective effort rather than individual countries pursuing isolated initiatives.

The approval of Starlink’s application is expected to improve internet connectivity in Ghana, particularly in rural and underserved area.
