The National Service scheme was established in 1973 with the purpose of deploying skilled manpower from tertiary institutions to support the development efforts of both the public and private sectors in Ghana.

Currently, national service is a requirement for all Ghanaians above the age of eighteen who have graduated from tertiary educational institutions.

However, Dr. Bawumia aims to change this by making it optional for students upon completing their education.

According to Dr. Bawumia, institutions will have the option to visit different campuses in order to recruit fresh graduates and strengthen their workforce.
