Level 200 Male Student Sentenced To 12-Month Imprisonment

Anyebas James, a 23-year-old Level 200 student at the University of Development Studies (UDS), has been sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment with hard labour by the Nkwanta District court.

He was found guilty of defrauding a businessman in the Nkwanta South Municipality.

James admitted to committing the crime and was subsequently convicted.

The case was presented before the court by Police Inspector Bright Nana Nkansah and presided over by Mr. Joseph Evans Anang Okrupa.

According to the prosecution, on July 10, 2021, Mr. James posted a Haojue DR motorbike for sale on his WhatsApp status and Facebook wall. Mr. S.K. Kwasi expressed interest in purchasing the motorbike and contacted James.

They negotiated a price of GHC8,500, and Mr. Kwasi transferred the money to James’ mobile money (Momo) account for the motorbike’s transfer.

After receiving the full payment, James requested an additional GH¢1,100 for motorbike registration, bringing the total to GH¢9,600.

However, he did not fulfill his end of the agreement and went into hiding in Nalerigu despite numerous attempts to contact him.

Mr. Kwasi reported the case to the Nkwanta Police station, leading to James’ arrest at his hideout after an investigation.

The court found him guilty, and his family contributed GH¢4,000 to partially repay the money he had taken, which was presented to the court.

As a deterrent to both James and others who might engage in such fraudulent activities, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison with hard labour.
