The Government, through the Ministry of Interior (MINT), has declared Friday, December 6, 2024, a public holiday.
This decision has been welcomed by many Ghanaians who need to travel to cast their votes on the Election Day – December 7
The December 6 marks Farmers’ Day, a statutory public holiday celebrated annually on the first Friday of December.
“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 6th December 2024 which marks Farmers’ Day, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” stated the Interior Ministry.

Farmers’ Day is an annual celebration that honors the contributions of farmers and fishermen in the country.
The first Farmers’ Day in Ghana was celebrated in 1985, following the severe famines of 1983 and 1984.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) presents special awards to farmers and fishermen who demonstrate excellence in their practices and output on this day.
This year, National Farmers’ Day was observed on November 8, which was not a public holiday.
However, the statutory public holiday on December 6 will be observed nationwide.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, December 7, eligible Ghanaians aged 18 and above will head to the polls to elect a new President and Members of Parliament.
Ahead of the elections, the National Peace Council met with all political parties and their presidential candidates on November 28, signing a peace pact to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
This agreement requires presidential candidates to commit to maintaining peace before, during, and after the general elections.
