The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed an outbreak of Dengue fever in the Eastern Region, following the detection of unusual cases of malaria-like illness that did not respond to standard antimalarial treatment.
In a press release dated 14th July, 2024, GHS revealed that nine cases have been confirmed by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and are being managed as non-severe cases at home.
According to GHS, a team of entomologists and epidemiologists from the national level is collaborating with regional health officials to investigate the outbreak and implement control measures.
“Dengue is a viral infection spread through mosquito bites,” explained Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS.
“Most people infected with Dengue experience no symptoms, but for those who do, common symptoms include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. While most recover within a week or two, some develop severe dengue, which can be fatal,” the statement reads.

In response to the outbreak, the GHS has taken several steps, including:
- Establishing a National Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) to coordinate efforts.
- Alerting all regions and districts to enhance surveillance and provide public awareness.
- Initiating enhanced surveillance to detect new cases.
- Conducting public education campaigns on signs, symptoms, and prevention.
- Undertaking entomological assessments in affected areas to identify and control mosquito populations.
The GHS emphasized that there is no specific medication for Dengue treatment, and treatment focuses on supportive care, including rehydration, pain relief, and rest.
The public is urged to avoid self-medication and take preventative measures against mosquito bites:
• Wear full sleeves and long dresses.
• Use mosquito repellent.
• Use insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
• Cover and drain water from containers like coolers, tanks, and barrels.
• Remove any objects collecting water in the house.
• Keep all stored water containers covered.
