Gari and beans is a type of dish made of staple foods in Ghana. It is usually common in the southern parts of Ghana popularly called bober, borbor or gobɛ, yo ke gari, and even ‘red red’.
Professor of Naturopathic Healthcare, President, Nyarkotey College of Holistic Medicine & Technology (NUCHMT)/African Naturopathic Foundation, Raphael Nyarkotey Obu’s research has shown that eating the ‘beans and gari'(Gobɛ) can lower the risk of having belly fat or even being obese.
According to him, the black-eyed peas used for the gobɛ are loaded with protein and soluble fiber, and these support Weight loss.
The protein found in gobɛ reduces the level of ghrelin, a hormone that is responsible for stimulating feelings of hunger.
The soluble fiber is a type of fiber that forms a gel-like consistency and that goes into the digestive tract slowly to make one full.

This according to Professor Obu’s research account for the reason why people like eating gobɛ to keep them for the day.
It was also revealed that eating gobɛ help promote regularity and increased stool frequency in those with constipation.
Frequent consumption of legumes is linked to lower markers of inflammation, therefore reducing the risk of heart disease.
The Gari also found as a good choice for people with health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol since it is extremely low in sodium, sugar, and fat, plus free from refined carbohydrates and synthetic ingredients.
The palm oil which is also loaded with tocotrienols, a form of vitamin E contains antioxidants that support brain health.
The plantain contains 913 milligrams of potassium in one cup cooked, mashed plantains. This is about 27 percent of the recommended daily amount of potassium for the body.
The vitamin C found in plantain was also found to be an antioxidant that fights free radical damages.
This helps support the immune system and fight diseases.
However, the study also revealed that, the blacked eye peas are likely to cause stomach pains, gas, and bloating in some people due to their content of raffinose, a type of fiber that can aid digestive matters.
So in conclusion the Black-eyed peas in gobɛ help increase weight loss, improve digestive health, and support better heart health.
