The National Teaching Council (NTC) is responsible for regulating the teaching profession in Ghana in accordance with the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (ACT 1023).
One of its key functions is to conduct the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), which is mandatory for all teachers in Ghana.
The purpose of the GTLE is to ensure that qualified teachers possess the minimum knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary to deliver effectively in schools and meet the demands of the National Teachers’ Standards.
The NTC has issued a notice reminding candidates of the ongoing registration for the 2023 GTLE 1, which is for re-sit candidates only. The reason for this is due to the GTLE reforms that are to be implemented this year.
The Council has given three chances to candidates who are associated with the traditional GTLE (Essential Professional Skills, Literacy and Numeracy) to redeem themselves. The first chance was utilised in 2022 GTLE 2. This year, two chances are available for re-sit candidates to utilise.
This ongoing registration for 2023 GTLE 1 is one of the two chances. After the two chances, there will be no examination for the traditional subjects in 2024 and beyond. Any candidate of the traditional GTLE who would like to write GTLE again will have to start afresh with the GTLE dispensation in 2024 and beyond.
Fees for Registration
Candidates who wrote the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination but were unsuccessful in some papers may register to re-sit. The registration process requires candidates to apply online at exams.ntc.gov.gh and complete the application form for the licensure examination.
The fees for registration depend on the number of papers that need to be re-sat. Candidates who are re-sitting a paper are to pay GHȻ 150.00, those re-sitting two papers will pay GHȻ 210.00 and those re-sitting all three papers will pay GHȻ 385.00.
Payment can be made at any branch of Prudential Bank Ltd nationwide or through mobile money payment using the short code *772*51# across all networks.
Candidates must notify the bank as to whether they are re-sitting one, two or three papers. Upon payment, candidates will receive a Pin and Serial Number from the bank, which they will use to log into the exams.ntc.gov.gh portal.
They will fill in all the required fields, upload a passport-sized photograph, review the information provided and submit the application. Candidates are advised to keep their PIN and SERIAL NUMBERS secured after registration for the licensure examination for further use after the examination.
Deadline for Application
The NTC has set a deadline of 25th April, 2023, for the receipt of completed application forms. No requests for changes to photographs will be accepted after the examination.
Candidates are also advised that there will be no extension in time for registration beyond the 25th April, 2023, deadline. The dress code for the examination is formal and candidates are prohibited from wearing bathroom slippers. Babies are not allowed at the examination centre.
The examination will take place on the 4th and 5th of May, 2023. The NTC will announce the registration of fresh candidates for the subject-based GTLE very soon.
It is important for teachers in Ghana to be licensed as it demonstrates their commitment to the profession and their ability to meet the required standards
