The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has addressed concerns regarding the inclusion of the ‘Ghanaian Language as an optional subject’ in the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)

In a press release dated 23rd February 2024, NaCCA refuted claims circulating that BECE Candidates would have the option to select one additional subject from a list of optional subjects, including Ghanaian Language, French, and Arabic.

The council emphasized that under the Common Core Programme (CCP) Curriculum, all learners are expected to study and be examined on the same mandatory subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Ghanaian Language, Religious and Moral Education, Creative Arts, Career Technology, Computing, French, and Arabic.

It was also clarified that there are no optional subjects within the CCP Curriculum. However, Schools are mandated to choose from a selection of Ghanaian Languages based on their capacity, and students will be assessed on these languages during the BECE.

The approved list of Ghanaian Languages to be examined at the BECE level includes Akuapem Twi, Asante Twi, Dagaare, Dagbani, Dangme, Ewe, Fante, Ga, Gonja, Gurune, Kasem, and Nzema.
