The Minister of Education has been requested to appear before Parliament on Monday, December 4th, 2023, regarding the recent directive made by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Parliament has expressed concerns over the directive, which instructs SHS freshers, teaching and non-teaching staff to commence academic work on December 4th.

The directive by the GES for the initiation of academic activities for first year students on such short notice has prompted Parliament to intervene.

Recognizing the inconvenience caused to students, parents, teachers, and non-teaching staff, the House proposes the first week of January 2024 as a more appropriate time for adequate preparation.

Acknowledging the urgency and the raised concerns regarding this matter, the Rt. Hon Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has directed the Minister of Education to address the House and provide Members with a briefing at 12:30 pm on December 4th, 2023.

It is worth recollecting that on November 9th, 2023, the provisional results for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School and Private Candidates, 2023 were released by the West Africa Examination Council.

Subsequently, on November 28th, 2023, the GES informed Heads of Institutions to begin registration and orientation for students, starting on December 4th, 2023.
