The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on all its regional secretariats to join Organised Labour in a planned nationwide demonstration.
The demonstration is aimed at protesting against the imposition of a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on domestic power consumption.
Organised Labour has set Tuesday, February 13 as the date for the demonstration if the government does not withdraw its directive for the Ghana Revenue Authority and power distributors to implement the VAT.

In a letter addressed to all regional secretaries and titled “13th February, 2024 Nationwide Demonstration Against 15% VAT on Electricity Consumption,” the teachers’ union expressed its participation in a meeting held by Organised Labour on February 2, 2024.
During the meeting, the leadership of Organised Labour decided on the nationwide demonstration against the government’s directive.

GNAT stated in the letter that it agreed to the decision to demonstrate “against the imposition of this insensitive tax.”
The union directed all regional secretariats to join Organised Labour in their respective regions to prepare for the demonstration scheduled for Tuesday, February 13.
Organised Labour argues that the imposition of VAT on domestic power consumption will worsen the already challenging economic situation for workers.

A previously issued ultimatum for the government to withdraw the tax entirely expired on January 29, leaving Labour with no choice but to proceed with the planned nationwide demonstration.
Labour has indicated that if the government does not respond positively to their demand after the demonstration, they will take further action.
