Yam is an extremely important crop for at least 60 million rural poor producers, processors, and consumers in West Africa providing multiple opportunities for poverty reduction and nourishment of poor people in the sub-region.

About 76 percent of yam production in Ghana takes place in the Brong Ahafo, Northern and Eastern Regions, which account for 39, 25, and 12 percent of total production, respectively, while the remaining 24 percent of production is distributed through- the Upper West, Ashanti, Volta and Western Regions

Between 1971 and 2020, the production of yams in Ghana grew substantially from 909,000 to 8.53 million tonnes rising at an increasing annual rate that reached a maximum of 200.10% in 1991 and then decreased to 5.52% in 2020.

However, Ghana is now the world’s largest exporter of yam. Ghana rakes in US$48 million in 2021 as export value for only Yam.

The U.S.A alone imported $87 million worth of yam from Ghana. Ghana now controls 24% of the $200 million global export market.

This has led to the growth of the country’s export value from $3.8 million in 2018 to 48.2 million in 2021.
