The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a warning regarding the heightened intensity of the harmattan season in the country, leading to extremely dusty weather conditions.

According to the GMA, the increased dust and prevailing dry weather have had a significant impact on human health, potentially contributing to a surge in respiratory conditions.

Individuals with chronic respiratory ailments, such as Asthma, are particularly vulnerable to acute attacks or deterioration of their conditions.

Moreover, the dusty conditions have also reduced visibility on the roads, posing a danger, especially during nighttime travel.

  • Individuals with Asthma should carry their inhalers at all times and adhere to prescribed medications.
  • If anyone experiences respiratory symptoms such as coughing, painful swallowing, runny nose, chest pain, or difficulty in breathing, they should seek immediate medical attention from the nearest healthcare facility.
  • Drivers are advised to avoid over-speeding, particularly on dusty roads and during nighttime.
  • The public is encouraged to refrain from burning bushes or engaging in activities that may cause bushfires.
  • Additionally, all roads currently under construction should be watered to minimize dust formation.
