A final-year student at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) in Nigeria, Favour Ugwuka, has allegedly taken her own life after failing a particular course repeatedly due to the actions of a lecturer.
Favour’s lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, beside her hostel on the university’s Ishieke Campus in Abakaliki.
Preliminary investigations suggest that she ingested a poisonous chemical.
According to a leaked voice note attributed to Favour, she had passed all of her other courses with distinction but continued to fail a single subject.
She claimed that the lecturer in charge of that subject had vowed she would never pass.
A video circulating online shows Favour’s mother distraught and accusing the lecturer of causing her daughter’s suicide.
“Dr. Enyi said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide,” the grieving mother said.
The university administration has expressed shock and sadness over Favour’s death and has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing.
