The Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) is a mandatory examination for anyone aspiring to become a licensed teacher in Ghana.
Purpose
The GTLE is designed to ensure that prospective teachers meet the National Teachers’ Standards on professional knowledge, practice, values, and attitudes necessary to deliver effectively in schools.
Eligibility
To qualify for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) administered by the National Teaching Council under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023), candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
- University Graduates: Successful completion of a university program (e.g., B.Sc., B.A., etc.) with no resit.
- Bachelor of Education: Successful completion of a four-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree from either public or private accredited colleges of education.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE): Completion of a PGDE program.
- Masters in Education (M.Ed): Completion of a master’s degree in education.

Important Points:
- All diploma holders are exempted from writing the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination. Those who wish to write must first obtain a postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE).
- Only programs related to education qualify candidates to write the Licensure Examination.
- Certificates are not required before being allowed to write the Licensure Examination. However, candidates must ensure they pass all semester courses with no resit before completion.

Examination Structure
The GTLE consists of three papers for fresh candidates:
- General Professional Knowledge Paper: This paper covers numeracy, literacy, and essential professional skills.
- Grade-level Specialism Pedagogy Paper: This paper is differentiated by levels of specialization (Early Grade/Early Childhood, Primary and JHS, SHS/SHTS, and Technical Vocational Schools).
- Multiple Subjects Content or Single Subject Content Knowledge:
- Multiple Subjects Content: For prospective teachers trained for Early Grade/Early Childhood or Primary levels.
- Single Subject Specialism: For prospective teachers trained for junior high, senior high, or TVET.

Indexing Process
Fresh candidates must go through an indexing process before registering for the GTLE.
This involves:
- Checking your status on the indexing portal to ensure your data have been uploaded by your training institution.
- Paying an indexing fee of Fifty Ghana Cedis (GH₵50.00).
- Receiving an indexing number via SMS, which is used to log in and verify your details on the indexing portal.
Registration and Payment
When the portal is opened, candidates can register for the GTLE through the National Teaching Council’s portal.
