The President of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana, Razak Soale, has firmly reacted to the recent decision by the Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to replace the teacher trainee allowance with an enhanced loan scheme.

Speaking on the Oyarepa morning show monitored by Coleman Publications on February 4, 2025, Soale argued that canceling the allowance would be detrimental to trainees across colleges of education.

He emphasized that the government should not only maintain the existing allowance but also increase it from GH₵400 a month to GH₵1,000 in order for the allowance to fulfil it purpose.

Soale pointed out that colleges of education lack the necessary facilities compared to traditional universities, making it challenging for students to fend for themselves.

He added that trainees are not allowed to cook due to the inadequate facilities, and if they were required to start feeding themselves, it would create significant issues.

Soale revealed that the association has plan to engage with the minister in the coming days to discuss the proposed transition to a loan scheme.

The Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, made his decision known during a recent meeting with Principals of Colleges of Education, stating,

“There is no way you should be feeding a student at the tertiary level offhand. We will work out a transition from the allowance into an enhanced student loan for them to feed themselves but in the interim they will still get the allowance.”

While the government is committed to this transition, Iddrisu clarified that implementation would depend on recommendations from the upcoming education dialogue proposed by President John Dramani Mahama.

The conference, scheduled for February 17 to 20, will address broader challenges facing Ghana’s education sector.

Additionally, the government currently owes trainees three months’ worth of allowance arrears that need to be settled.
