The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a call to candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and had their results withheld to come forward for investigation.

The announcement, posted on WAEC’s official website, invites affected students, accompanied by their parents or guardians, to visit the WAEC regional office in the region where they took the exam.

According to WAEC, the results were initially withheld due to suspected involvement in examination irregularities.

“The candidates who took part in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024 and had their results withheld are kindly invited to the WAEC Regional Offices where they wrote the examination on the assigned dates indicated by their names,” the statement reads. “They are to be accompanied by their parents/guardians.”

The move comes after the release of the 2024 WASSCE results on December 31, 2024. The results were approved for release following the 37th Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee on December 16, 2024, which included investigations into cases of irregularities reported during the exam period.

WAEC has taken a firm stance against examination malpractice. They revealed the cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates found to have brought foreign materials into the examination halls, such as prepared notes and textbooks.

Additionally, the entire results of 483 candidates were cancelled for possessing mobile phones during the exam.

“We have a responsibility to ensure the integrity of the examination process,” stated John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs for WAEC, in the official statement. “These measures are necessary to maintain fairness and credibility for all candidates.”

In addition to the cancellations, WAEC also reported withholding subject results for 781 candidates and entire results for another 209 candidates due to various suspected offences.

Furthermore, results from 319 schools are under investigation for alleged collusion. The final outcome of these cases could result in either the release or cancellation of the withheld results.

A total of 460,611 candidates from 1,003 second-cycle schools across Ghana participated in the 2024 WASSCE for School.

This number is a 2.66% increase from the 2023 entry figure. Despite this large number, 4,609 (1%) of registered candidates were absent from the examination.
