The Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba has made a decision to ban the wearing of niqab and burqa in examination halls.

This decision was made after extensive discussions surrounding the controversies that arose from the wearing of religious garments to examination halls.

According to the decision made at the meeting held on September 26, 2023, students are not allowed to wear the niqab, which is a piece of cloth that fully covers the face, leaving only the eyes or a screen over the eyes which does not allow others to see the wearer’s face.

The only religious garment allowed in the examination hall is the hijab, which is any garment that fully covers the rest of the body except for the face.

However, in situations where the identity of a particular student is in doubt, and there is a need to see the face of a female student wearing a hijab, this should be done by a female invigilator.
