The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has proposed a revision of the pass mark for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE).

This proposal was made in a communiqué and resolution issued during TTAG’s 28th Annual General Assembly, held at Tamale College of Education from November 1st to 4th, 2024, under the theme “Prioritizing Long-term Initiatives in Colleges of Education and Bridging Policy with Practice: The Role of Stakeholders”.

Aligning Exams with Academic Schedules

The communiqué, released on November 14th, 2024, acknowledges the National Teaching Council’s (NTC) pivotal role in maintaining teaching standards through the GTLE.

However, TTAG recommends that the examination schedule be better aligned with teacher trainees’ academic calendars to enhance success rates.

According to TTAG, it is counterproductive for teachers to complete their studies, return home, and then prepare anew for the licensure exam.

“We recognize the National Teaching Council’s role in upholding teaching standards through the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE). However, we recommend a review to better align the Examination timing with Teacher Trainees’ academic schedules to improve success rates,” the communiqué states.

Proposing a Lower Pass Mark

TTAG has also proposed a reduction in the GTLE pass mark from 52% to 50%, advocating for its inclusion in the final semester curriculum.

“We advocate for the GTLE to be included in the curriculum, administered in the final semester, and set at a pass mark of 50%,” TTAG stated.

Background on the GTLE

Introduced in 2019 by the Ghanaian government, the GTLE aims to license and certify teachers, thereby enhancing their professional status and ensuring they meet national standards.

Initially set at a pass mark of 70%, this was later reduced to 52%.

Purpose and Content of GTLE

The GTLE’s mandate is to improve the professional status of teachers, meeting the nation’s demands.

The NTC, established by the Education Act of 2008, conducts the examination to regulate the teaching profession and license teachers.

The examination covers General Professional Knowledge, Pedagogy, and specific subject areas, focusing on practical applications rather than traditional academic exams.

Questions are categorized into four Depth of Knowledge (DoK) levels, ranging from recall to extended thinking questions.

TTAG’s proposal aims to make the GTLE more accessible and aligned with the academic journey of teacher trainees, potentially improving their professional readiness and success.
