The 46 Public Colleges of Education in Ghana have been facing challenges over the years, especially with regards to infrastructure and accommodation.

During last year’s admission, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission,GTEC, placed a quota on the number of students that could be admitted into the various colleges.

This decision was controversial at the time, and it still raises questions to this day.

Many applicants are wondering if the admission quota will still apply for the 2023/2024 academic year.

In this article, we will take a closer look at some of the reasons for the quota and the government’s response to the challenges facing the colleges.

Reasons for the 2022/2023 admission quota:

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission disclosed that the 2022/2023 admission quota was due to a lack of infrastructure and accommodation issues in the various colleges.

This decision did not go down well with many applicants and other high profiles, as they believed that it was based on the government’s inability to pay allowances if more students were to enroll.

Although this claim was refuted by GTEC, there were still doubts about the real reasons for the quota.

Government’s response:

Following the announcement of the admission quota in 2022/2023, the Minister of Education promised to build hostels in the various colleges to address the accommodation issues.

However, it seems that these promises have not been fulfilled, as most of the proposed hostels are still in the pipeline, with some still in the bushes.

This lack of action on the part of the government has led to concerns about the readiness of the various colleges for the 2023/2024 academic year.

Will the admission quota still apply in 2023/2024?

The big question now is, will the admission quota still work for the 2023/2024 academic year? If the reason given in the 2022/2023 academic year was the main issue, then the issue is clearly not resolved, and it may still impact the upcoming (2023/2024) academic year admissions.

The lack of infrastructure and inadequate accommodation cannot be ignored, and there is a need for the government to take swift action to address these challenges if only they want the colleges to admit more applicants for the 2023/2024 academic year.

Hmmm, this Npp Government we will show them in 2024, what I am even wondering is the quota system on last year’s admission, they know very well that they can not admit all qualified applicants but they re-opened the portal after they closed it. so many students bought the forms but did not get admission, imagine a college with 1000 qualified applicants but was instructed to take 250 out of 1000.
