The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced its intention to commence an indefinite strike, citing continuous breaches of agreements by the government.

The decision comes after an emergency National Council meeting held on December 20, 2024.

In a press release dated 23rd December, 2024, CETAG expressed deep concerns over the government’s failure to honor signed agreements and roadmaps concerning the arbitration award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) on May 2, 2023.

“Despite our good faith in calling off the strike on August 20, 2024, following appeals from the Vice President’s Office, the Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, and the Minister of Education, the government has once again blatantly breached the agreement reached on August 19, 2024,” CETAG noted.

The National Council of CETAG detailed several reasons for the strike:

  • The government’s failure to migrate colleges of education teaching staff to the affiliate universities’ pay structure within 20 months.
  • Delays in paying the remaining 42 colleges a one-month basic salary for all-year-round work in 2022, as ordered by the NLC.
  • The non-payment of the top-up for book and research allowance for 2023 to staff of Akrokerri College of Education.

“We have made numerous engagements with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, but these have proven futile,” CETAG revealed.

“Our efforts to resolve the matter amicably have not yielded any concrete outcomes.”

CETAG has urged all stakeholders in teacher education to intervene to ensure the smooth migration of its members to the university pay structure.

The association has given the government until December 31, 2024, to address their concerns or face the indefinite strike action.

“We shall no longer tolerate any further excuses or willful violations of the agreement signed between us,” CETAG declared.
