The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has called on the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to shut down colleges of Education.

The president of TTAG, Soale Abdul Razak has emphasized that the closure is necessary as teacher trainees have been on campus for the past five weeks without any academic work due to the industrial action by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) since June 14th, 2024.

According to TTAG, there is no end in sight to the strike, leaving teacher trainees stranded on their various campuses.

The association highlighted that the strike has already disrupted the academic calendar, and any unfinished work will inevitably spill over into the next academic year.

According to them, it is a waste of limited resources if students continue to be on campus without any academic activities.

The situation is particularly challenging for final year students who have rented their own apartments due to a new residential policy implemented by the government.

These students may not be able to complete their programs of studies as scheduled on 7th September 2024, resulting in additional rent fees and charges.

Furthermore, TTAG noted that the majority of tutors have left the campuses, depriving trainees of necessary supervision, protection, and guidance.

As a result, the association’s president is urging the government and GTEC to take swift action and close down the colleges to avoid any unforeseen complications.
