The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has appealed to its members to remain calm as the industrial action by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) enters its sixth day.

TTAG, the representative body for all teacher trainees in Ghana’s 47 public Colleges of Education, has emphasized its continued efforts to advocate for a resolution to the ongoing dispute.

The CETAG strike, which commenced on January 2, 2025, stems from the government’s failure to meet previously agreed-upon conditions of service and other commitments, as highlighted by TTAG in a statement released on January 7.

While acknowledging the legitimacy of CETAG’s demands, TTAG underscored the detrimental impact of the strike on the lives and academic progress of teacher trainees across the country.

“We empathize with the CETAG and acknowledge their frustrations as they are making legitimate demands,” the TTAG’s statement read.

However, the association also highlighted the practical difficulties faced by students, particularly those in their final year.

“The impact of the strike on Teacher Trainees has been severe. Time has been wasted, resources misused and more especially, Level 400 students are struggling to manage additional expenses such as rent, utilities and feeding costs as they stay off-campus,” they noted.

In the statement, TTAG disclosed that it has been actively engaging with various stakeholders in an attempt to find a lasting solution.

“The Leadership of the TTAG has consistently engaged the relevant Stakeholders to seek lasting solutions,” the statement confirmed.

Despite these efforts, the association expressed disappointment that the government has not yet addressed the core issues. “It is unfortunate that the Government is unable to honor its commitments,” they stated.

In a move to further expedite a resolution, TTAG noted it has directly contacted the office of the President-Elect, John Dramani Mahama.

“We have reached out to the Office of the President-Elect of the Republic of Ghana to schedule a meeting to discuss the way forward,” the association announced.

Against this backdrop of uncertainty and disruption, TTAG has issued a firm call for calm amongst its membership: “While we await feedback on this meeting, we urge all Teacher Trainees to remain calm as we continue to advocate for a lasting resolution.”
