Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, the newly appointed Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), brings a wealth of experience and a rich academic background to his new role.

Early Education and Foundation:

Professor Davis began his formal education at Self-Reliance Kindergarten in 1976.

He continued at Presbyterian Primary School in Abowinmu in 1978, later transferring to Aboom A.M.E. Zion School in 1981, all located in Cape Coast.

His foundational education laid the groundwork for his future academic achievements.

His pursuit of knowledge continued as he entered the then Experimental JHS, Bakatsir in Cape Coast, in 1985, completing his studies there in 1987.

He then gained admission to the prestigious Mfantsipim School in 1987, where he excelled, obtaining both his “O” and “A” level certificates in 1991 and 1993 respectively.

Higher Education and Academic Ascent:

After completing his National Service in 1994, Professor Davis gained admission to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in 1996 to pursue a Bachelor of Education (Mathematics), graduating in 1999. His dedication to his field was evident early on.

He began his career at UCC as a Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Science and Mathematics Education in 2000.

In 2002, he transferred to the Institute of Education, and was awarded a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) scholarship, allowing him to pursue an MA in Mathematics Education at Hiroshima University in Japan, which he completed between 2000 and 2004.

Upon his return from Japan in 2004, he was appointed as a lecturer at the Institute of Education, further solidifying his role as an educator and researcher.

His drive for higher knowledge led him to pursue a PhD in Mathematics Education at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, from 2007, fully funded by two Australian government scholarships. He successfully completed his PhD in December 2010.

Academic Achievements and Contributions:

Professor Davis’ career trajectory demonstrates consistent growth and commitment to his field. By dint of hard work, he was promoted to the ranks of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor in 2010, 2015, and 2018, respectively.

His supervision of 11 PhD and 25 MPhil theses demonstrates his deep commitment to nurturing the next generation of scholars.

His scholarly contributions to the field of Mathematics Education include 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals such as Sage Open, showcasing his expertise and thought leadership.

Professor Davis was also the leader of the team that developed the new B. Ed national curriculum for preparing teachers at the basic school level in Ghana and UCC affiliated colleges.

This included curriculum development for the College of Distance Education, UCC, and regular students on the UCC campus in 2018.

Currently, he serves as the Provost of the College of Education Studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Personal Life:

Professor Davis is married to Mrs. Etheldreda Charlotte Davis, and together they have four children. He is a devout Christian and a member of Pedu Liberation Family Chapel in Cape Coast.

Professor Davis delivered his inaugural lecture on Thursday, March 28, 2024, on the theme: “Socio-cultural Issues: A Missing Ingredient in Mathematics Curriculum Development and Delivery in Ghana.”, further showcasing his expertise and vision for education in Ghana.

With a life dedicated to education, research, and leadership, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis is poised to bring his wealth of experience and vision to his new role as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.

His extensive knowledge of the Ghanaian education landscape, coupled with his passion for innovation, makes him well-positioned to guide the sector towards a path of growth and excellence.
