NUGS Demands End to CETAG Strike, Warns of “Devastating” Impact

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a strong call for an immediate and amicable resolution to the ongoing CETAG strike.

The union in a release dated 24th July, 2024 expressed deep concern over the escalating situation, particularly following the actions of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and CETAG.

NUGS noted the recent developments, including the withholding of July salaries for College of Education staff and CETAG’s subsequent withdrawal of all services.

The union has revealed that, in collaboration with the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), it had previously initiated dialogue with the Ministry of Education to address the situation.

“The leadership of NUGS, in collaboration with the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), initiated steps to address this issue a few weeks ago. We received assurances from the Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, that efforts are underway to find a resolution”

However, NUGS stressed the urgency of the solution, highlighting the detrimental impact the prolonged strike is having on students.

“The disruption of the academic calendar. delays in final exams, and resulting uncertainty are causing significant stress and helplessness among students. The risks involved in this continued stalemate are too significant to disregard,” NUGS stated.

“The education and future of thousands of students are at stake. We urge the government, CETAG, GTEC, and all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being and interests of the students and find a swift and amicable solution without further delay,” the statement concluded.
