The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has issued a stern warning to principals of colleges of education, affiliate universities, and students regarding any attempts to violate the class attendance policy.

In a press conference held on July 22nd, 2024, at Wesley College of Education, Kumasi, CETAG stated that any quizzes or end-of-semester examinations conducted during the ongoing strike action will be met with legal action.

The warning comes as CETAG continues its strike action, which began on June 14th, 2024.

The association insists that the strike is legal and will not be called off until their demands are fully met by the government.

According to CETAG, they have received reports of principals attempting to convince students that affiliate universities will be conducting quizzes and examinations despite the ongoing strike.

CETAG revealed that such an information is inaccurate as the attendance policy of all affiliated universities mandates a minimum attendance requirement before a student can sit for an exams.

With lecturers absent for over 21 days due to the strike, CETAG emphasized that students are ineligible to participate in any assessments.

“CETAG is using this medium to advise students and principals and affiliate universities that, any attempt to violate the class attendance policy shall be met with legal action by all the stakeholders in the teacher education space,” CETAG stated.

Furthermore, CETAG addressed recent circulars in the public domain regarding the government’s payment of book and research allowances and NLC legal injunctions.

CETAG refuted claims by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) that arrears for book and research allowances for the 2022/2023 academic year had been paid to its members.

They also denied the existence of a legal injunction against their strike action, as claimed by the National Labour Commission (NLC).
