The Municipal Education Directorate of Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem-(KEEA) on Tuesday, 19th July, 2022, organized a Reading festival for the basic schools in the Municipality.
The event took place at the Assembly Hall of the Municipal Education Office, Elmina.
The contest, which was collaboration between United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ghana Education Service, (GES)-KEEA, sought to promote reading culture among the learners in the lower primary in the municipality.
it was also meant to induce the interest of parents, guardians and the community in the reading of both Ghanaian Languages and English.
The festival, themed “Read to Learn, Learn to Read”, was as well geared towards selecting the best performing district to represent the municipality at the regional level.
The activities undertaken by the pupils included word formation, mother and child, spelling Bee in English and Ghanaian Language, reading competition in English and Ghanaian Language, chants and Songs.

Some Celebrities, including Akosua Asarebea Otu(Miss GNATLAS, Central Region & 1st Runner Up for National Miss GNATLAS), Richard Mensah( Candy Man) and Miss Emelia Gambo of Aldesgate Methodist Basic School, graced the occasion and participated in activities such as story sharing by Adult and Reading by Celebrities.

Making it known to the Pupils and all present that, all celebrities and well known individuals are people who are well vested in reading, hence, they should spend time with their books as pupils by reading if they want to become like them.
The event also attracted stakeholders including Parents Teachers Association, School Management Committees and other Educational authorities.
There was also a cultural display by the Brease A.M.E Zion Cultural Troupe to entertain the pupils and dignitaries present.
Welcome Address
In her welcome address, The Municipal Education Director, Ms Cecilia Aboagye declared that, the programme was to complement the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service’s effort to improve performance in the country’s public schools.
Ms Cecilia Aboagye emphasized that, no one can excel in other subjects without knowing how to read and comprehend what is read.
“Everybody who need knowledge must read to acquire it. And It is after acquiring this skill that you can read other subjects like science and mathematics”, she stated.
Ms Cecilia Aboagye after urging parents to keep supporting their wards education added that, the reading festival is aimed at improving the reading skills at the foundation level.
Key Note Address
In his key note Address, the former Cape Coast Metro Director, Ghana Education Service – Mr. Philip K. Incoom, asserted that, Reading is an inseparable aspect of the whole educational sphere, and its primary purpose is to understand a test.
Mr inkoom further noted that, children are now allowed to spend too much time on the internet with their phones than with books.
He said, this practice is killing the reading ability of pupils. He then urged the parents and teachers to encourage pupils to read and possibly read with them.

Enlightening the pupils and the individuals present about the need to read, he concluded his address by admonishing the pupils to avail themselves when it’s time for reading lessons.
Certification
Certificates and Awards were presented to winners and performing pupils from the various schools.
Mr. Henry Amartey, the moderator for the programme, commended the schools and the pupils for their tremendous displays. He added that , the various winners will represent at the regional and possibly the National level.
The chairperson, Miss Painstil, in her closing remarks urged the winners and their teachers to step up efforts to win at the regional and the national competitions. She also commended USAID and the various dignitaries for supporting the event.
Elmina Sharrif Islamic Basic School is missing from the participating schools.
