Submission by Mr. Theoplius Kweku Bassaw

In his submission, Mr. Theoplius Kweku Bassaw asserted that the inauguration and launching of the upper primary education students’ association mark another historical event in the college.

He applauded the students and the education department for the bold step taken in inaugurating and launching the association, adding that he honestly believes the association will serve its purpose.

Mr. Theoplius Kweku Bassaw then admonished members of the association to come together and fight for the success of the association and Upper primary education in Ghana.

“there are a lot of challenges confronting upper primary education and its teachers in Ghana. As an association, I want to urge you to come together and publish on those challenges. Pursue and be problem solvers. Let conformity be your hallmark and work for the advancement of the association in the country”, He expressed.

Professor Asonaba Addison, Guest Speaker

Speaking on the theme for the celebration, the Guest Speaker, Professor Asonaba Addison remarked that there are crucial roles played by upper primary teachers in Ghana.

With Juxtaposition, Professor Asonaba Addition likened teachers at all levels to a plant, expounding that the early graders are the root, with Upper Primary and Junior High School teachers being the stems and branches respectively.

“when the roots obtain the water, they dispatch it to the leaves as it were, through a conduit which is the stem of the plant. It clearly suggests that without the stem, there is no way plant’s water supply can manifest. Without the stem there will be no branches, neither will there be leaves nor flowers nor fruits. This means that upper primary education is exceptionally paramount” Professor Asonaba expressed.

He added that the cliche as an upper primary advocate should be “fixing the root without sustaining the stem makes no tree”. And that is; “No Stem No Tree”

The Guest speaker commented that the upper primary classroom is a different learning environment that requires personnel well-trained and equipped with certain qualities which are exclusive to them alone.

“At the Upper Primary, learners are looking for real connections, they want to get to know their teachers and they want their teachers to get to know them”, Professor Asonaba Addison posited.

Ways to Build Good Relationships with learners as a teacher

Similarly, Professor Addison delineated eight(8) things upper primary teachers must do if they want to build good relationships with their children;

  1. Teachers at the Upper primary level should be enthusiastic about their teaching and their students
  2. Create a safe classroom environment for students to be themselves
  3. Take an interest In their students’ lives outside of the classroom
  4. Their attitude should not rub off on the students. Be a positive teacher
  5. Make learning fun and interesting
  6. Get to know the parents of your learners.
  7. Share your life with learners(within reason)
  8. Encourage students to have a say in their learning.

Professor Asonaba Addison added it is essential for upper primary education teachers to ensure that their pupils think globally, work in groups, and become confident enough to take their path where necessary.

He concluded by pointing out that, the work of the upper primary education teacher should give children the skills and knowledge they need for the transition into Junior High School and their further education as well as make a strong and positive contribution to society.
