
Madam Kutum Comfort Madah, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Home Economics Education, UEW and the Vice Chairperson for the Ghana Home Economics Association (GHEA), has urged individuals to stop discrediting the importance of studying Home Economics.
She believes that the misconception that home economics is only for non-academic students is unfounded. It takes a higher level of skills and intelligence to become a skilful Home Economics practitioner.
Madam Comfort emphasized that home economics encompasses a lot that many are unaware of. It is a field that has many career opportunities and available markets.
“Home Economics covers a fairly large range of skills that ranges from learning food preparation and safety to childcare, and even to interior decorating and hosting. These are all skills that can easily be converted into careers outside of the home,” she stated.
She further added that home economics serves as a springboard to those who are interested in one of many careers, as the subject has help people to know how to live and function in their adult lives.
Madam Comfort made these revelations at the launch of the Komenda Home Economics Students Association (HESAK) on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, where she was the guest speaker.

Under the theme “The Home Economics Teacher in the 21st Century: An Agent for Family and Societal Well-being,” Madam Kutum Comfort Madah stressed that Home Economics Education in the 21st Century has moved beyond teaching basic household tasks.
Stating It now encompasses a broader range of skills, such as financial literacy, sustainable living practices, and fostering healthy relationships.
Madam Comfort called on the students at the event and people in the field not to accept any negative perception that people hold about the field.

She believes that it is one of the best fields that is sustaining and moving the nation forward. “Home Economics is a field of intelligence and skills that should not be underestimated”, she concluded.
