The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the withholding of salaries for teaching staff at Colleges of Education across the country for the month of August 2024.

The decision was conveyed through a letter sent to the Director of Payroll at the Controller & Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) on August 19th, 2024.

According to the letter, GTEC stated that no payments should be made to teaching staff until further notice.

However, it was emphasized that the salaries of College Principals and their Vice-Principals would continue to be processed and paid as usual.

“We request your good office to stay action on the August 2024 salaries of teaching staff of the Colleges of Education until advised otherwise by the Commission”

This latest directive follows a previous letter from GTEC, dated July 23rd, 2024, which was referenced in the recent communication.

The letter, signed by GTEC Acting Director General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, requested the cooperation of all parties involved and was later communicated to the Minister of Education and all College Principals.

Response from CETAG

In response, the Ag. National Secretary of CETAG has revealed that the GTEC letter was issued before their meeting at the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations (MELR), which led to the call-off of their strike.

According to him, at the meeting, Prof. Jinapor was directed to write a new letter to the CAGD to order the payment of both July and August salaries.

“At the last meeting on Monday at MELR, Prof Jinapor was directed by both the Minister for MELR and Education to write to CAGD to order payment of both July and August salaries”

Members of CETAG are encouraged to remain calm and await further updates on the salary payment situation.

“A new letter shall reach CAGD and the colleges soon as the telephone call has been made to CAGD since yesterday to upload both July and August salaries for validation”
