GTEC Director-General Urges CETAG to End Strike, Resume Teaching

The Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, has urged members of CETAG to return to the classrooms while negotiations with the government continue.

Speaking at the 16th Congregation of the Offinso College of Education, Professor Jinapor emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing their grievances.

“You can be in the classroom while you still make your case,” he stated, appealing to members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) and other teacher unions.

Professor Jinapor clarified that the current issue is not solely about salaries but about overall conditions of service.

He assured the teachers that their concerns are being taken seriously and that their welfare is a top priority for the government.

The GTEC Director-General also emphasized the importance of CETAG respecting the law and appreciating the checks and balances within the governance architecture.

He reaffirmed GTEC’s commitment to supporting teacher education and promoting educational leadership development in Ghana.

The Principal of Offinso College of Education, Very Rev. Dr Joseph Nkyi Asamoah, echoed Professor Jinapor’s call, highlighting the impact of the strike on the academic calendar.

However, CETAG has earlier stated that they will only halt their industrial action if the government fulfills their requests.

Therefore, it remains uncertain whether CETAG will call off its industrial action, which commenced on June 14, 2024.
