The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced plans to recruit newly trained and qualified teachers who are indigenes of Bawku and Pusiga in the Upper East Region to teach in various government basic schools in the area.

This decision follows the mass exodus of teachers from these areas due to security concerns stemming from an ongoing conflict. According to GES statistics, 495 basic school teachers have fled Bawku Municipality and Pusiga District since 2022.

In response to this crisis, GES has initiated a special recruitment drive to hire teachers who are already residing in the Bawku enclave.

The belief is that these teachers will be less likely to leave the area due to their strong ties to the community.

The Upper East Regional Director of GES, Bright Lawoe, explained to Daily Graphic  that the service is currently compiling a list of interested candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an indigene of Bawku or Pusiga
  • Must have successfully completed a teacher training program
  • Must have passed the teacher licensure examination
  • Must have completed national service

Once the list is finalized, it will be submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval and financial clearance.

The newly recruited teachers are expected to begin work in September 2024.

GES has assured stakeholders that it is committed to addressing the shortage of teachers in Bawku and Pusiga, and is working to ensure that all schools in the area have the necessary teaching staff to improve the quality of education.
