The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong warning to all Heads of Basic and Senior High Schools, both public and private, regarding the registration of unqualified candidates for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a letter dated January 27, 2025, signed by the Director of Schools and Instructions Division, Mr. Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, GES reiterated that only final-year students—JHS3 for BECE and SHS3 for WASSCE—are eligible to register for these critical examinations.

The letter emphasized that registering students from lower classes, such as JHS1/SHS1 and JHS2/SHS2, is a direct violation of the rules and regulations set by both GES and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

“Also, it is illegal for any head of public basic or senior high school to register Form 3 students from another school (public or private) to write the BECE or WASSCE,” the letter reads.

To ensure compliance, GES disclosed that an audit will be conducted after the registration process to verify the eligibility of all candidates.

“Any student found to have been registered illegally will have their registration nullified by WAEC.”

Regional Directors of Education have been instructed to communicate this directive to Metro, Municipal, and District Directors, who are then responsible for informing all Heads of Schools.

The GES stressed the importance of heads adhering to these guidelines to ensure a smooth and fair registration process for the 2025 examinations.

The letter concluded with a warning that failure to comply with these directives will result in severe sanctions against offending school heads and individuals involved.
