The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the renewal and issuance of new licenses to all professional teachers, in accordance with a directive from the National Teaching Council (NTC).
This initiative is mandated by Section 60(d) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023), which requires the registration of teachers who meet the necessary conditions for licensure.
License Renewal and Issuance Schedule
The NTC, which began the registration and licensing of teachers in 2021, has stated that the licenses issued at that time are now due for renewal after their three-year validity period.
The renewal process will commence in the Greater Accra Region on Monday, November 25, 2024.

Important Information for Teachers
Updated License Card Design: The new license card will include additional information such as the teacher’s subject specialism and category.
Issuance of New Cards: All teachers will receive new cards, regardless of whether their current cards have expired.
Good Standing Requirement: Possession of the new card does not automatically indicate that a teacher is in good standing.
Renewal Conditions: Teachers with expired licenses must fulfill all conditions for renewal, including acquiring the required CPD points.
Verification through QR Code: The new license card will feature a QR code for verifying the registration status. Scanning the code will reveal whether the teacher’s registration is current or expired.

Professional Development
Teachers are encouraged to take their Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes seriously to accrue the necessary points for license renewal.
Validity of License and Registration
- The license card is valid for five years.
- Registration is valid for one year, expiring on December 31 each year.
- Renewing the license card does not automatically renew the registration, which is essential for defining a teacher’s professional status.
GES has requested that Regional Directors disseminate this information to all teachers through their respective Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to ensure compliance.
