The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), will be conducting monitoring visits to Senior High Schools (SHS), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS), and STEM schools across the country from February 10th to 14th, 2025.

The visits aim to assess the implementation of new internal assessment practices introduced as part of the new SHS/SHTS/STEM curriculum this academic year.

The initiative, outlined in a letter from GES dated January 30th, 2025, will see teams of two representatives from GES and WAEC visiting schools with Year 1 students.

The monitoring efforts will focus on ensuring the effective roll-out of these new assessment methods, which are an integral part of the updated curriculum.

“We are committed to ensuring a smooth and effective implementation of the new curriculum,” GES noted. “These monitoring visits are crucial to providing the necessary support to our schools and teachers, and will enable us to address any challenges promptly.”

During the visits, the monitoring teams will engage with school management, Year 1 teachers, and learners.

The purpose of these engagements is to evaluate how the internal assessment practices are being implemented on the ground, and provide support where necessary.

“Our aim is to collaborate with schools to enhance the learning experience for students, and assessment is a key part of that,” said a WAEC official. “The data gathered during these monitoring visits will be vital in strengthening assessment processes across the board.”
