The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has issued a directive to the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), ordering them to call off their ongoing strike immediately.

The Commission has expressed its disappointment with CETAG’s decision to go on strike at a crucial time when the government is actively working to address their concerns.

CETAG had declared an indefinite strike on Friday, June 14, 2024, citing the government’s delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and negotiated service conditions.

However, the FWSC CEO, Benjamin Arthur, speaking in Accra, described the strike as an act of bad faith.

Arthur emphasized the government’s willingness to resolve the issues raised by CETAG, stating, “Government has demonstrated goodwill towards this because we believe that it is mutually beneficial, and it will benefit this country that at least we do something for our colleagues who are teaching in the colleges of Education. The government means well.”

He urged the teachers to return to the classrooms and resume their teaching duties.

Professor Samuel Atintono, President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education, also expressed disappointment with CETAG’s decision to strike.

He highlighted the negative impact of the strike on the proper flow of academic activities for students.

Members of CETAG have therefore been urged to call of their strike to enable negotiations to begin over their conditions of service.

According to FWSC, the government remains committed to finding a solution that will address the concerns raised by the association to ensure the smooth functioning of colleges of education across the country.

However, the decision to call off the strike now rests with CETAG, as the FWSC and other stakeholders continue to work towards a resolution that is in the best interest of both the teachers and the students.
