There have been some cases of trainees in Colleges of Education resorting to destructive means to address issues that they face in their institutions.

This has to some extent led to the destruction of properties and has also caused some damages.

However, it is important for trainees to note that there are laws governing demonstrations in Ghana, and if it becomes necessary to demonstrate, it must be done through the rightful channels.

This article aims to shed light on what one must do if they want to embark on a peaceful demonstration.

Demonstrations are a way to signal and share grievances in a more amplified but peaceful way. Therefore, it is important to follow the right steps to ensure that the demonstration is peaceful and law-abiding.

The first step is to understand the laws governing public gatherings, including demonstrations. The Public Order Act is the key legislation that governs public gatherings.

It is important to familiarize oneself with these laws and regulations before embarking on a demonstration.

Next, it is important to identify the cause of the demonstration. Clearly defining the purpose and cause of the demonstration is essential. It should be a specific issue or topic that you want to address or raise awareness about.

After identifying the cause, it is important to form a group of like-minded individuals who support the cause and are willing to participate in the demonstration.

Creating a core organizing team will help with planning and logistics. Planning is crucial for any demonstration, as it doesn’t just happen.

The next step is to notify the police at least five days before the planned demonstration. Provide them with details such as the date, time, location, and expected number of participants.

Choosing a suitable location for the demonstration is also important. It could be a public square, park, or other open space.

Ensure that it can accommodate the expected number of participants and has the necessary facilities.

Planning logistics is also crucial. Determine the route of the demonstration, including the starting and ending points.

Arrange for any necessary permits or permissions from relevant authorities. Consider factors such as transportation, security, and facilities like restrooms and first aid.

Spreading the word about the demonstration is also important. Utilize social media, traditional media, flyers, and word-of-mouth to inform the public about the event, its purpose, and how they can participate.

Prioritizing the safety of participants during the demonstration is also crucial. Coordinate with the police to provide adequate security and crowd control measures.
