Brief Background

Komenda College of Education is a co-educational teacher education college in Komenda, Central Region (Ghana).

The college started in 1948 out of the buildings(Barracks) left by the Fleet Air Arm of the British Navy after World War II.

Through the efforts of Mr. A.B. Sam, the legacy was leased to the Methodist Church Ghana, in 1947 to be used as a training college.

The then government made some renovation works on the buildings to make them suitable for educational use.

On March 11, 1948, the first batch of students numbering forty men was enrolled to start an initial 2-year Teacher’s Cert ‘B’ program.

In 1952, the college became a co-educational institution with its first batch of thirty women.

The college has gone through the following academic programmes:

  • 2-year. Cert “B’.
  • 4-year. Cert “A”.
  • 2-year. Cert “A” (Post –Sec)
  • 3-year. Specialist (Music & Art)
  • 2-year Modular Course
  • 3-year Cert “A” (Post –Sec)
  • 4-year (Untrained Diploma in Basic Education)
  • 3-year Diploma in Basic Education

Currently, It is one of 46 public colleges of education in Ghana and is affiliated to The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED).

Current Courses offered at Komenda College Of Education

Komenda College of Education has received an Institutional accreditation from Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to run the following programs;

  1. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood program (regular).
  2. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Primary Education program (regular).
  3. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Junior High School Programme (regular), with specialisms in;
    a. Home Economics
    b. Visual Arts
    c. Technical
    d. Mathematics and ICT
    e. Science and Mathematics
    f. Agriculture Science

The motto of the college is “Bepכwso Kurow Hyer3n”, meaning a city set on a hill, shines forth.

The college’s vision is to set the pace for academic excellence in teacher education in the country.

However, D7 is not an acceptable grade for getting admission to Komenda College of Education. Your only guarantee for admission is to PASS your WASSCE with a good grade(A1-C6)

Admission Requirements

The general requirement for admission to the 4-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Programme is as follows:

WASSCE Holders:

CREDIT PASSES (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising Three (3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of

SSSCE Holders:

CREDIT PASSES (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising Three(3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of study.

Candidates who are yet to write either the WASSCE or NABPTEX examinations this year can also apply as awaiting results
