The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) received an invitation from the National Labour Commission (NLC) for a hearing on their ongoing strike on 16th August, 2023 which they honoured.

Following the hearing, the NLC declared that CETAG’s strike action is legal, and directed the government to immediately implement the arbitral award orders.

According to the NLC’s directive, the government must implement all the orders awarded on 2nd May, 2023, before any action can be taken to call off the strike by CETAG. The government was given two days to show action.

This implies that CETAG’s strike will continue until the government demonstrates tangible evidence of implementing the awarded orders.

To ensure accountability and progress, both parties have been given a deadline. By the 30th of August, the government and CETAG must present a detailed report on the implementation of all the Arbitral Award Orders before the Commission.

While the NLC refrained from explicitly instructing CETAG to call off their strike, the commission appealed to the association to consider the impact of their action.

It is important to note that although the NLC has appealed to CETAG, urging them to consider calling off the strike, the association is not legally bound to do so at this time.

Therefore, until an official announcement is made by CETAG or any further directives from the National Labour Commission, the legal strike initiated by CETAG will remain in force.
