The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has rejected an appeal by the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) to end their ongoing strike action, accusing the body of siding with the government to perpetuate injustices against CETAG members.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to the National President of PRINCOF, CETAG’s National Council detailed their reasons for rejecting the appeal, highlighting a history of PRINCOF’s actions that have resulted in the freezing of CETAG members’ salaries during past strikes.
The letter, dated August 6, 2024, stated that PRINCOF has facilitated the freezing of CETAG members’ salaries on multiple occasions, most recently in July 2024, as a means of pressuring the union to end its strike.

The council also pointed to the fact that despite the publication of a staff audit report in September 2023, PRINCOF failed to take concrete steps to ensure its implementation for CETAG members.
CETAG also accused PRINCOF of advising the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) not to implement the staff audit report, claiming that PRINCOF believes CETAG members do not deserve the same conditions of service as university lecturers.
The letter further highlighted the fact that PRINCOF’s appeal to resume work came with a caveat that the body would facilitate the payment of frozen July salaries for CETAG members who returned to work, suggesting that the appeal was made in “bad faith.”
CETAG stated that it would only consider ending its strike when the government fully implements all the demands outlined in their strike declaration statement, which was issued on June 14, 2024, and served to PRINCOF.

The union urged PRINCOF to channel its energies towards ensuring the government implements the outstanding Compulsory Arbitration Award for CETAG members without further delay.
“We wish to use this letter to unequivocally state that our legitimate strike action shall only end when the Employer has done the needful by fulfilling all our demands as contained in our strike declaration statement issued on 14th June 2024, which PRINCOF was served a copy”
